The seemingly-endless desert is one of the places available as travel destination from the travel menu. It's not accessible by default, the player gets access to it during To the desert quest.
Travelling in the desert[edit | edit source]
Travelling in the Desert works differently than normally, to represent its endlessness. The Desert functions like a grid, with all important locations having fixed coordinates, while the others are represented by generic tiles. Note that the desert edge isn't a part of the coordinate system, only the tile directly above it is (which has 0:17 coordinates); also note that Y axis is inverted, as it goes down when you travel north, and up when you travel south, while X axis works as normal.
Travelling in the Desert (excluding indoors locations and edge of the desert) gradually drains your stamina; stamina drain starts at 0, but goes up by 1 with every changed tile (0 damage on first move, 1 at second, 2 at third, etc). Running out of stamina sends you to the last checkpoint. Entering the edge of the desert, or the northern/southern entrances to the Desert Town resets the counter; it also resets each time you drink from oasis, which also fully heals you.
Desert Maps allows to track the path to important areas, using as starting point either 0:17 tile (map to the Desert Town) or specific tiles near the town itself. Following the map correctly, you would always encounter at least one oasis. If you possess a Compass, whenever you open the map, you would see both your current coordinates, and the coordinates of each stop.

Notes[edit | edit source]
- Reaching Y18 or above forcibly sends the player to the edge of the desert. You may use it to quickly leave the Desert if you get lost: just keep going to the south until you either escape, or pass out from losing all stamina and get sent to respawn point.
- 0:0 point is the centre of the Desert Town, meaning that it's the exact centre of the map.
